Meet the Fone Arena Team - me!

Meet the Fone Arena Team - me!

I have been blogging for Fone Arena for exactly a year now (well, blogging is actually an overstatement as the contribution to the site has been minimal). Check out the interview with my good friend Michael Hell over at Fone Arena in their latest 'Meet the Fone Arena' feature, this time featuring me! I look forward to writing many more reviews and features for the site, as well as meeting the rest of the fantastic team in the future. Happy days!

#LDNTwestival 2011: an evening of social fun for charity

#LDNTwestival 2011: an evening of social fun for charity

Last Thursday we attended the #LDNTwestival the London event that forms part of Twestival, a single day consisting of a global movement which uses social media to organise local community events in support of a local cause or charity. A list of official events can be found here.

This year's #LDNTwestival was held at The Cape in the City of London and supports the Centrepoint charity. Centrepoint's main mission is to tackle homelessness among young people. The event was organised by volunteers and 100% of the money raised from ticket and raffle sales went to Centrepoint. The total amount raised was US$8,969.84 as of 30 March 2011.

Some of the raffle prices were pretty cool. Included were three months of burritos by Chilango, a vintage vodka, Nintendo Wii, Soda Stream, a Financial Times subscription and ten limited edition Angry Birds slingshot toys courtesy of #LeStudio52. We bought £10 worth of raffle tickets, but alas didn't win anything. Still all the monies goes directly to Centrepoint, so it wasn't a lost cause.

Funniest moment of the evening was when Nick of The Average Gamer won an Angry Bird. We joked about how those who already had the birds would probably win one, and Nick did! Lucky Voice were there organising karaoke. Check out the fabulous Heather Taylor rocking it out in this photo set of the evening by yours truly.

BBC Radio 3: Big Red Nose Show with Largest Kazoo Ensemble

BBC Radio 3: Big Red Nose Show with Largest Kazoo Ensemble

Audience at yesterday's BBC Radio 3 Red Nose Show at the Royal Albery Hall has set a new world record for 'Largest Kazoo Ensemble'. The record involved 3910 audiences taking part, 49 more than the previous record set in Sydney back in 2009. Me and @hardij were there when the record, played over Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and the Dambusters March, was broken. The chaotic video below was recorded via my N8, so please excuse the blurriness. Add that to YouTube compression, and it isn't the most stunning video but at least you get the idea.

The event will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 18 March 2011 at 7pm, as part of Red Nose Day telethon for the Comic Relief charity.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Wow, this blog has been ranked 27 by Cision PR on their top 50 consumer technology blogs list in the UK. This surely ranks way up there in this blog's achievement (the other being linked by Nokia)!

I am pretty surprised by the recognition. When I started blogging in 2004, I did not know I would still be maintaining this blog eight years later. Through this blog, I've come to know many great people many who I'm become friends with, like Vysia from Unruly Media, who I met in 2005 in a small blogger's meetup.

Looking at the list, I feel honoured to be sharing them with some other people I know: Dan who writes for Coolsmartphone (4), Rafe from AllAboutSymbian (5) and the wonderful peeps from Three UK (50).

Special thanks to Jenni, my long term partner who has put up with me for far too long than she deserves. Also thanks to my friends on here and twitter, and last but not least you readers. Without you, this blog would not still exist!

Thanks to Mark for the heads up!

Among good friends

Among good friends

So the Sky Lanterns event didn't happen. It was rather unlucky of us, but this is Britain and the weather gods decided to give this island a good hammering. Teach me a lesson for trying to organise an event on the third day of Chinese New Year, a day when superstitious asian people believes that no one should socialise. Not that I believe in all that crap.

Still we ended at The Queen pub on Primrose Hill Road, but not before bumping into Laurence at the Apple Store in Covent Garden - Google Latitude and Foursquare proves once again what useful social applications they are. Just in case you were wondering what I was doing at the Apple Store - my phone battery died due to a poorly programmed power hungry app (Whatsapp), and I needed to email, check the forecast, charge my Nokia phone using electricity stolen from Steve Jobs etc.

Anyway, Jenni and I decided to scout out The Queen decided it was good place to hold an impromptu meetup for people who didn't get the message that the event was cancelled. It is a pretty decent pub, clean (albeit a bit posh) and was right next to Primrose Hill. They also happen to serve good food.

As I suspected that my message may not have reached everyone, I started walking up and down the hill since 6.30pm to intercept anybody who were carrying large flat squarish things. First to arrive were our fellow St Albanian's Gaz and Carl, who decided to attempt to launch the lanterns but failed. Next was my good friend and social animal Julian with a couple of his couch sharing friends. They knew it was cancelled but decided to show up anyway to hang out.

Then my good friend Nicola, who I haven't seen in seven months and wouldn't see again for another year, called (thank goodness I charged my phone). After walking up and down the hill, I spotted her and her best friend Emma walking down by the road, alongside another participator. It was good seeing her again, and I will be honest it would be a great disappointment if we didn't meetup before she jets off again.

We enjoyed the breathtaking London skyline from the summit of Primrose Hill before heading off to the pub where Heather and the super awesomeness that is Motoko Liu (who travelled all the way from Basingstoke to be there - despite knowing it was cancelled) has just arrived.

It was a good evening. There were Angry Birds toys, chatters about how awesome Battlestar Galactica is (in fact, it was here we hatched an idea of BSG season one marathon session - watch this space) and other stuff. I was among good friends, and for that I am happy enough.

In any case, thanks to Jenni's heroics she has managed to quickly reschedule the event to Tuesday 8 February with Rob at the Civil Aviation Authority. That's tomorrow! We got out lanterns at Cotswold Outdoor shops - three lanterns for £9 and they are eco friendly ones. So that's at 7.30pm - meet us on the summit.

Phew, it's tough writing personal posts, but I enjoyed it.

January Tweetstats

January Tweetstats

Hei it's February! How was your January? Personally I thought January was a bit slow, but February is so going to kick ass.

Anyway, was looking at my Tweetstats for January, and it isn't a pretty sight. Have a look at this graph:

I am going to need a lot more sleep in February than I had in January. Problem is, will I?

Energy saving light bulbs do make a difference

Today I went downstairs and took the meter readings to submit to our electricity company. Out of curiosity, I also took down our neighbour's. Then I did some number crunching.

Last year we consumed an average of 282 units a month and that was with electric heating. Our neighbour (same size) uses 439 units! That's an average of 9.2 units per day for us, and 14.4 units per day for them! They were using 56% more electricity than us!

Our social life is about the same. He is a banker and regularly goes out to parties. I am a social wannabe and regularly goes out to parties. Granted they have a bigger telly (42" vs 32"), and also the same PS3 slim we have. But we do use ours more - at least based on our conversations (I have about twenty PS3 games, they have two). We have two laptops (sometimes three), they have one. Being social media freaks, we are always online - they are the opposite, preferring instead to be disconnected and private.

So where did we do right? Well all our flats are fitted with the same halogen lamp in the living area, but and here's the main difference - we don't bother turning ours on. Instead we use floor lamps with CFLs.

So there you have it. Energy saving bulbs do help. A lot. So next time you read a Daily Mail article hating on CFLs, remember this: they are wrong.

I am growing a moustache!

That is right, as part of the Movember challenge, I've stopped shaving and is attempting to grow my first moustache in support of The Prostate Cancer charity. Really, is there a better way to welcoming oneself into the 30s than growing a mustache? I think not!

If you want to sponsor either me and/or team #LeStudio52 (who I am part of), you can do so here. Thank you for your support!
