Aloft & Music Dealers: Artist Spotlight

Aloft & Music Dealers: Artist Spotlight

On Wednesday I will be attending a new artists evening event at The Vinyl Factory, Soho, London. The event, appropriately called Artist Spotlight, is a collaboration by Aloft, the new hotel brand by Starwood  Hotels; and music licensing company, Music Dealers. The event aims to promote new music talent and also to celebrate the launch of the Aloft hotels in London later this year.

Artists featured will include Jay James Picton, local Camden band Bones and Tiger Love, who recently supported Yelle. Check out the video of Jay James Picton below. I have not heard of him before, but his brand of acoustic soul sounds great.

Nokia gets even with HTC

HTC are holding a press event in London on 12 April. That's tomorrow. Nokia will also be holding a press event tomorrow, concerning Symbian. Do you know where I am going with this? Yes, Nokia is getting even with HTC for Nokia World 2010.

Just a reminder. At last year's Nokia World 2010, HTC and Nokia had a funny and very public spat in front of the world's technology press. Basically HTC sent a couple of coaches to Nokia World in order to ferry journalists to Central London for the HTC London press conference. In retaliation Nokia sent a couple of employees to 'picket' the event with Ovi Maps balloons and handing out Nokia lunch boxes with Ham, Tomato and Cheese sandwiches to the press outside.

So what will Nokia announce? Well I suspect (or hope) we will see a full preview of the long awaited revamped of Symbian UI. We will also see new device announcement in the form of a new E-series flagship, the E6 which replaces the successful E72, and X7.

In any case I will be at the HTC event. Expect a new Android flagship smartphone filled with features we do not need to be revealed. Follow my twitter stream for updates from the press conference.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play Launch Party in London

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play Launch Party in London

Last week Sony Ericsson launched their latest salvo of Xperia smartphones. The Xperia Play went on sale in the UK on Friday, while the Arc a couple of days before. If you have read my impression of the Xperia Play, you will know that the Xperia Play is a PlayStation certified Android phone that has an integrated gaming pad and access to PlayStation Suite. Android games optimised for the Xperia Play as well as old PlayStation classics will be available on the market.

As part of the launch Sony Ericsson set up a pop up gaming room at the Old Sorting Office, New Oxford Street in Central London, where the public was able to go hands on with the Xperia Play. The warehouse was transformed into a video gaming scene set in the Far East (Vietnam), decorated with props that are lifted out of gaming scenes such as a helicopter, sport car, rocket launcher and a crashed car. Sony Ericsson reps were dotted around the venue and were ever so helpful when demoing the devices to guests. A competition to win a Xperia Play was also held for guests checking in via Foursquare.

In the evening the warehouse was transformed into a party venue. All the props remained, but the area was now cordoned off to the public. VIP guests were then treated with (very) loud music, free drinks, hawker-style Chinese chow mein noodles and a free gig by a certain Tinchy Stryder.

London International Pillow Fight Day 2011 flashmob

London International Pillow Fight Day 2011 flashmob

Today is International Pillow Fight Day 2011. As I write this, various pillow fight flash mob has happened or are happening in cities around the world from Hong Kong, Lisbon, Paris, Cape Town to New York. The London event happened today at 3pm at Trafalgar Square where several hundred participants pounded each other for almost an hour. It was incredibly fun and full of energy, with people from all walks of life participating. Many has vowed to make it for next year's International Pillow Fight Day 2012 - to be held on 7 April 2012.

Update:

I have just been informed that the 'Fight for Japan' pillowcases you see in the pictures I posted below were designed by Quick & Shirty. The pillowcases were sold at the Pillow Fight day in London. In fact you can buy t-shirts and other merchandises with the design on it, with all proceeds going towards the Japan Red Cross.

Here's a short video clip I recorded while in the middle of the pillow fight action:

And here are a selection of pictures:

Among good friends

Among good friends

So the Sky Lanterns event didn't happen. It was rather unlucky of us, but this is Britain and the weather gods decided to give this island a good hammering. Teach me a lesson for trying to organise an event on the third day of Chinese New Year, a day when superstitious asian people believes that no one should socialise. Not that I believe in all that crap.

Still we ended at The Queen pub on Primrose Hill Road, but not before bumping into Laurence at the Apple Store in Covent Garden - Google Latitude and Foursquare proves once again what useful social applications they are. Just in case you were wondering what I was doing at the Apple Store - my phone battery died due to a poorly programmed power hungry app (Whatsapp), and I needed to email, check the forecast, charge my Nokia phone using electricity stolen from Steve Jobs etc.

Anyway, Jenni and I decided to scout out The Queen decided it was good place to hold an impromptu meetup for people who didn't get the message that the event was cancelled. It is a pretty decent pub, clean (albeit a bit posh) and was right next to Primrose Hill. They also happen to serve good food.

As I suspected that my message may not have reached everyone, I started walking up and down the hill since 6.30pm to intercept anybody who were carrying large flat squarish things. First to arrive were our fellow St Albanian's Gaz and Carl, who decided to attempt to launch the lanterns but failed. Next was my good friend and social animal Julian with a couple of his couch sharing friends. They knew it was cancelled but decided to show up anyway to hang out.

Then my good friend Nicola, who I haven't seen in seven months and wouldn't see again for another year, called (thank goodness I charged my phone). After walking up and down the hill, I spotted her and her best friend Emma walking down by the road, alongside another participator. It was good seeing her again, and I will be honest it would be a great disappointment if we didn't meetup before she jets off again.

We enjoyed the breathtaking London skyline from the summit of Primrose Hill before heading off to the pub where Heather and the super awesomeness that is Motoko Liu (who travelled all the way from Basingstoke to be there - despite knowing it was cancelled) has just arrived.

It was a good evening. There were Angry Birds toys, chatters about how awesome Battlestar Galactica is (in fact, it was here we hatched an idea of BSG season one marathon session - watch this space) and other stuff. I was among good friends, and for that I am happy enough.

In any case, thanks to Jenni's heroics she has managed to quickly reschedule the event to Tuesday 8 February with Rob at the Civil Aviation Authority. That's tomorrow! We got out lanterns at Cotswold Outdoor shops - three lanterns for £9 and they are eco friendly ones. So that's at 7.30pm - meet us on the summit.

Phew, it's tough writing personal posts, but I enjoyed it.

Stella Artois announces Cidre

Stella Artois announces Cidre

AB InBev, the world largest brewer, today announced that they will be entering the premium cider market under the Stella Artois brand. The Stella Artois Cidre is a new Belgian cider made from apples fermented in Belgium, and will be available in the UK from April, with a 4.5% abv.

Speaking at the launch, Stuary MacFarlane, President of AB InBev UK was particular enthusiastic and confident that the Cidre is able to corner the premium cider market and cited market research and blind testing against the two leading premium cider brands. 13% of UK adults are said to drink cider at least once a month, so there clearly is market for them.

I was there at the launch, and had my first taste of the new drink. I'm no cider expert, but I liked what I drank. And so did many others. Journos don't lie you see - well not when it came to alcohol at least. It is crisp and fresh and isn't overwhelming. As far as I am concerned, I would pick the Cidre over a Bullmers, Strongbow and Magners.

What do you think? Are you a cider drinker? Would you drink a Stella Artois Cidre?

Sky lanterns gathering

Sky lanterns gathering

Hi all,

Two months ago I witnessed sky lanterns floating across the sky in St Albans. They were launched not simultaneously, but within 10-20 seconds of each other. It was a pretty sight, but it wasn't anything special. It didn't feel epic.

Then it hit me. Why not organise a gathering of people and launch hundreds of these together? You know, do it properly like what these people do in Asia every year. I pulled out my phone, opened up the notepad and keyed in three words "Sky lantern flashmob".

As with many ideas, I soon forgot about it. Weeks passed, and we did another flashmob. You may remember reading about it, or even attending it. It was Angry Birds Day, officially sanctioned by Rovio Mobile. We learnt a lot from organising it.

On a recent founders meetup at our little studio hideout in Shoreditch, we were bouncing around ideas when I remembered that I had what I thought was a cool idea from a couple of months ago. I picked up my phone and navigated to my notes apps, and there it was "Sky lantern flashmob".

To cut a short story shorter, we decided that the 'flashmob' (I use the term flashmob loosely) would be on Saturday 5 February to coincide with the beginning of Chinese New Year.

If you've seen the new HSBC advert with the hundreds of sky lanterns floating to the heavens - that is exactly the general idea on what we are attempting to achieve, but in London.

We've been thinking hard about where we could hold such a gathering. My first thought was the Millennium Bridge. It is an iconic bridge in London, and would be a magnificent backdrop to the event. But the proximity of buildings around does concern me. We do not want to be responsible for causing the third Great Fire of London!

We've identified Primrose Hill as being suitable for launching sky lanterns, but if you have any suggestions on alternative locations please let us know below.

Due to the nature of sky lanterns, we can only launch them when there is no to little wind and definitely not when it is raining. If the weather does not suit us, we will have to postpone it to another date.

What you will need to do:

- RSVP here or on Facebook
- Get a couple of (if possible wire-free) sky lanterns. You can get this at most places now. I've seen them on sale at Cotswolds, Tesco, Hawkin's Bazaar, Amazon, play.com, Firebox.com etc.
- Bring matches, fire lighters etc.
- Have fun

Angry Birds Day London event

Angry Birds Day London event

Last weekend was the first anniversary of the hit mobile puzzle game. To celebrate, Rovio Mobile, the Finnish based developer behind the game urges the fans of the game to celebrate by organising flashmobs around the world dubbed 'Angry Birds Day'.

We at #LeStudio52 has been thinking for a while on organising an Angry Birds competition using large screen, so when Rovio suggested this we immediately ceased the opportunity to turn the London event into the most memorable. We had the backing of Nokia as the main partner. Rovio also sent toys to be distributed to people attending the flashmob. Other partners includes Chillingo (the publisher of Angry Birds on iOS), Powermat and Spreadshirt.

We were divided into three groups, and we instructed to meet at 1pm at the respective meeting point. The idea was to meet up at different pubs, and have the participants of the flashmob meet up by 'finding the bird'. I was leading the group (that includes Chillingo) at The Nags Head on St James Street near Covent Garden tube station. Everyone who spotted me and my Angry Bird, got an Angry Birds plush toy.

The flashmob began at 2pm sharp on Covent Garden. After walking around the parameter of the famous market, we were stopped by security who insisted we leaved the borough, but we were allowed to continue our 'protest' on the bordering neighbour of Westminster Borough. The flashmob grew bigger as people started following us, and others caught up. We stopped outside the Zimbabwe Embassy and had a brief chat with the protesters outside. Eventually we arrived at Trafalgar Square, despite being previously warned by the authorities not to 'protest' there.

The flashmob was coming to an end, but then I shouted that we should head down to Parliament Square. Well we didn't quite make it to the former now none-Democracy Village, but we did stop outside the Horse Guards Parade and were allowed by security outside Downing Street for a quick photo stop.

The post flashmob event was held at the Northumberland a short walk from Trafalgar Square. There we held competitions, the top prize being a Nokia N8 generously donated by Nokia. Other prizes includes capacitive gloves, Powermat wireless charger and Angry Birds t-shirts.

The final consisted of a face off between Richard who won the 'most points' in Angry Birds level-5 competition and Ollie, who bested everyone by getting through six levels in the trial Angry Birds quickest (1.32 minutes). Ollie won the big prize (the Nokia N8) by hitting Richard three times using the Angry Birds plush toy.

Big thanks to Julien, the main brain behind the event, the people at Rovio and Nokia for supporting the event, 1000heads and WOMWorldNokia, Jenni and Abul from #LeStudio52, Lee for helping out with me in judging the competition and all the volunteers who made it happen (Alexa, Scott, Gareth - apologies if I forgot anybody else).

Angry Birds is available on iOS, Android, Symbian, Maemo 5 and WebOS, and soon to be available on PSP, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
